Someone Is Rocking You From Above

Vdeo byVideo by Garrett Parker

Created under the choreographic mentorship of Doug Varone through the Devices program, Someone is Rocking You from Above is the first iteration of Mar’s ongoing research into non-verbal physicality shaped by Catholic devotion, fear, and ritual. The piece explores the urgency of striving toward something unreachable—a salvation that feels just out of reach.

The performers move through rhythmic cycles of collapse, resistance, and surrender. Their bodies respond to an invisible pull, caught between effort and exhaustion, as if answering a call that cannot be fully understood. The atmosphere builds toward a state of collective intensity—raw, unsettled, and charged with longing.

Rooted in memory but not narrative, the work evokes internal states passed down through generations: guilt, submission, and the silent need to be redeemed. This piece marked the beginning of a process that would later evolve into Por Debajo de la Rodilla and Doves Don’t Fly at Night.
